Why Try Outdoor Teambuilding Activities?

Blog

Creating a strong company culture isn't always easy. However, when you get it right, you should have fewer HR issues and greater productivity. One way to achieve a harmonious workforce is through teambuilding activities. Here's why you should try those that take place outdoors.

Office Escapism

Teambuilding should ideally focus on some sort of escape from the office. Office escapism lends itself well to employees relaxing, as they're no longer in the environment where they feel a need to be formal. Outdoor teambuilding should introduce your employees to an environment that's entirely different to their working one. When they're no longer indoors, they may find it easier to mingle with one another and form new connections.

Serotonin Boost

Outdoor teambuilding boosts serotonin in a couple of ways. First, it stimulates vitamin D production through exposure to the sun. Vitamin D plays a role in stimulating serotonin release. Second, it usually involves activities that get heart rates pumping. Exercise also encourages the release of serotonin. When you're employees benefit from greater serotonin exposure, they feel happier. And when they feel happier, they're more likely to participate in team-building in a meaningful way.

Tackling New Challenges

If you're working in an office environment, the challenges your team tackles together may often feel repetitive. When you ask them to form teams and work together in an outdoor environment, you're asking them to face something new. When they're facing something new together, they may feel a greater sense of reward in tackling the challenges ahead of them. As a result, they may benefit from greater bonds that translate to happier workplace relationships.

Cooperating Together

Another perk to removing your employees from an everyday environment for team bonding is that they're forced to cooperate with one another. The great outdoors is probably a little alien to them as far as teambuilding goes. They'll have a chance to demonstrate their skills outside of their workplace titles. In doing so, this could result in some interesting role shifts. For example, juniors may naturally fall into a leadership role, and quieter persons may become great mediators. Such role shifts can result in better workplace relationships overall.

By choosing outdoor team building activities, you're taking your employees away from their familiar environments. While they tackle new challenges in an alien environment, they may gain a greater sense of satisfaction and respect for one another. All you need to do is find an activity and schedule it.
